Abstract
In conventional Direct Shear Test (DST) setups, instrument readings and data recording may still be performed manually, potentially introducing reading and transcription errors and limiting integrated data management. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an Android-based digital data acquisition system using a retrofitting instrumentation approach for conventional DST equipment without modifying its main mechanism or basic testing procedure. The system integrates digital instruments, an acquisition unit, and an Android application to support automated data acquisition, visualization, storage, analysis, and reporting. Evaluation was conducted at three normal stress levels of 9.80, 19.60, and 29.40 kPa, using a 0.01 mm horizontal displacement change as the acquisition trigger and conventional recording at 0.10 mm intervals for comparison. The results showed a MAPE of 0.993%, MAE of 0.411 N, RMSE of 0.507 N, and of 0.9996. Mohr–Coulomb analysis yielded a cohesion of 11.75 kPa and an internal friction angle of 21.88°. The system showed low relative differences and a strong linear relationship with conventional records.
