Abstract

Abstract

The Sunda Strait megathrust zone represents a significant seismic threat resulting from tectonic activity along the subduction interface located within a seismic gap segment. This study aims to evaluate the seismic performance of an existing reinforced concrete building in an earthquake prone region and to propose retrofitting strategies to reduce damage caused by potential large earthquakes associated with the subduction zone activity. Data were obtained through field surveys material testing and structural analysis using ETABS software. The results show that the existing building cannot resist lateral displacements exceeding 1,0% of total building height under seismic loading. Retrofitting using steel bracing is able to reduces lateral displacement to less than 1,0% of building height and lowers the risk of structural failure from excessive deformation. This study emphasizes periodic seismic evaluation based on updated hazard maps and the need for retrofitting measures to mitigate megathrust earthquake risk and ensure occupant safety.
